Sunflower blur focus

I will teach you here how to use the Gaussian Blur filter obtaining a nice focus effect.
Start by saving this picture to your computer and opening it with Adobe Photoshop.

Using the Lasso Tool try making a contour of the centered flower like in the picture.

Then go to Select>Inverse.

You will obtain this.

Now go to Filet>Blur>Gaussian Blur.

There set this value.

And this is your effect using the gaussian blur.

The selection’s too large …. The Gaussian’s too “blurry” … Not the best i’ve seen ..

Hey, some cool tuts you have here :p Only thing I can say is try and go into detail around the flower. It looks a bit out of place. Its pretty easy to do, just make a few selections with the magic wand tool, and is worth it in the end, for a better effect, otherwise a pretty good tut for beginners.

You explain it well but prehaps it would look better if you did one of two things, Lighten up on the Gaussian Blur or usre a Lens Blur instead

Yeah… this is obviously for newbies. This tutorial leaves you with a picture that looks horrible.
Try this to make it look good:
1. Select with a PEN tool for a perfet selection.
2. Copy the selection onto a new layer
3. Go to the original layer and blur the whole thing with gaussian blur
4. Flatten image.
You get the “shallow DOF blur” that looks good, not like in this example where you have stray sharp pixels around the sunflower.
